DISC GRANTED FOURTH U.S. PATENT FOR NEO® MEDIA PACKAGE AND FIRST UTILITY PATENT, IN KEY DEVELOPMENT

HAUPPAUGE, NEW YORK [March 24, 2016] – DISC, a leading source of specialty packaging solutions for more than 40 years, announced today that the company has been granted a fourth U.S. patent for its NEO® Blu-ray Disc® package. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) approved the package’s fourth patent, and its first Utility Patent. The patent issue notification from the United States Patent and Trademark Office was received by DISC on March 16, 2016. U.S. Patent Number 9,305,598 will issue on April 5, 2016. The claims of the issuing patent cover the very heart of the NEO® package’s laminated foldable assembly for storing Blue-ray® and other discs. With the issuance of its first utility patent, a major piece of the strategy for the NEO® package is complete. While DISC has successfully received multiple design patents covering aspects of the NEO® package, this is its first utility patent for the new and highly celebrated product. Asked about their strategy, Richard Roth DISC’s Chief Strategy Officer noted that the issue notification could not have been timelier, as “DISC is starting to see the first attempts of competitors at copying our truly novel design.”

In order to strengthen the company’s development of the packaging for other uses and markets, we applied for and were granted additional patents to cover specific aspects of its design, components and utility.” To date DISC has received U.S. Design Patents D717164 and D742741, Canadian Design Patents 156501 and 162494, Chinese Design Registration ZL201430118759, and European Industrial Designs 002458224-0001-0003. And the innovation doesn’t stop there, as DISC continues to actively seek further protection for a variety of features and innovations related to the NEO® package both in the U.S. and internationally.
